Carolus Magnus wins impressively at Newmarket
Carolus Magnus, a 3yo gelding by Holy Roman Emperor out of the Beat Hollow mare Izola won the first race of 2021 at Newmarket impressively on Tuesday afternoon.
Carlous Magnus ran a promising third on last month’s Doncaster debut and improved significantly for that experience to win a historically competitive maiden on only his second start. Ridden by Oisin Murphy, Carolus Magnus jumped out of the starting gates well and was quickly moved to the rail and the always had control of the race. He’s entitled to improve again and looks an exciting horse for the future. The Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot in June could be a target, with one more run needed in between.
A brilliant team effort has gone into this performance as Carolus Magnus had an injury as a 2yo that required patience from his owners and careful handling by Andrew Balding, Hetta Stevens and Merton Place Stud to get him back to the track. Huge congratulations to his partners who have been through a real journey to get to today!
